Will your domain keep working?

Type your site's address. The check asks the domain's registry when its registration runs out and who it is registered with, and asks the public certificate logs when the site's certificates do. You see whether the address your customers type is renewed in time, and where to log in to keep it that way.

Free, with no sign-up. The address is not kept.

What it checks

Two dates that can take a site down

A domain is paid for a year or a few years at a time, and a site's certificate lasts a few weeks or months. If the domain lapses, the website and every email address at it stop working. If the certificate lapses, browsers show a full-page warning instead of the site. Both dates are public, and the check reads them.

  • The renewal date

When the domain's registration runs out, from the registry for its extension. Under a month is worth a look, because a renewal that fails, for example on an expired card, takes the site and email with it.

  • On hold or being deleted

Whether the registry has put the domain on hold, or into the stages a lapsed domain goes through before anyone else can register it.

  • The registrar

Who the domain is registered with, so you know where to log in, and a note when it was bought through a reseller, where the account is often the web designer's.

  • The certificate

When the newest certificate for the site in the public certificate logs runs out. Hosts renew them on their own, so one running out with nothing newer issued means the renewal has stopped.

What it cannot see

Who gets the renewal notices

Registries hide the owner's contact details, so the check cannot see which email address gets the renewal notices, or whether the card on file still works. It reads the certificate logs, not the certificate the site serves this minute, and a few extensions, such as .de, publish no renewal date it can read.

The domain is one section of the full site check, which runs them all at once with every problem in one list.
